4 - Embracing Linguistic Diversity in Neuropsychology - A Call to Action

Demographic changes in the population are increasing the ethnoracial diversity of communities, both globally and nationally. These changes in patient demographics present opportunities for neuropsychologists to work with linguistically diverse groups. However, the field of neuropsychology remains largely monolingual English speaking, and there continue to be systemic barriers in accessing valid and linguistically sensitive care for those with limited English proficiency. This presentation will apply Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems lens to identify obstacles for non-native English speakers (NNES) across multiple system levels. An action-oriented advocacy framework will then be used to discuss practical steps neuropsychologists can take to integrate linguistic diversity in neuropsychological evaluations, promote equitable, patient-centered care, and work toward dismantling systemic and structural barriers experienced by an increasingly diverse ethnolinguistic population.

Learning Objectives:

After the session, participants will be able to:
  1. Describe global and national changes in the linguistic diversity of populations that neuropsychologists evaluate.
  2. Utilize Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems perspective to identify systemic barriers for non-native English speakers (NNES).
  3. List at least three practical steps neuropsychologists can take to embrace ethnolinguistic diversity across multiple system levels.
