Dr. Carlson is a Professor in the Department of Mental Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (SPH), core faculty member in the Center on Aging and Health at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and holds joint appointments in the Johns Hopkins SPH Department of Epidemiology, and in the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. Dr. Carlson focuses on modifiable risk factors of Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. She uses neuroimaging, wearable technology, linked Medicare, and geocoded environmenal data to design interventions that examine how the environment impacts neurocognitive aging and dementia risk. She is determining how these trials of community engagement and immersive 3-D gaming boost neuroplasticity, particularly in underserved populations. Through this work, Dr. Carlson is examining how physical, social, and cognitively enriching activity in one's neighborhood promotes brain and cognitive health.
